| Hackensack-based law firm Cole Schotz and the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund have announced the 24th Annual Battle of the Barristers softball tournament and are seeking additional teams to participate in the fundraiser. All proceeds go to the Fresh Air Fund, which has been sending inner-city children to summer camp for 125 years. The tournament will take begin on Tuesday, July 20 at 1 p.m. at Brookdale Park on Watchung Avenue, with the championship game taking place around 6 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University. In the event of rain, the tournament and championship will occur in the same locations on Thursday, July 22. The initial registration fee for this year's tournament is $2,000. Each team's total will range from $5,500 to $8,500, incentivized to reward positive performance, including final ranking and other team statistics. " and we welcome additional teams of any business type," said Fresh Air Fund Chair and Cole Schotz Partner Warren Usatine. "A two-week session at summer camp can cost hundreds of dollars, even more for those with special needs. These kids deserve to explore a different setting from the city and to enjoy the outdoors." The Battle of the Barristers is the largest annual fundraiser for the Greater Newark Fresh Fund, pulling in $100,000 in 2009. Each tournament is organized by the previous year's winner, and for the second straight year, that honor belongs to Cole Schotz, which has participated in the tournament for three years. Since 1882, the Fresh Air Fund has been providing free summer camping experience for inner-city children from disadvantaged communities in the Greater Newark area. This year, the organization aims to send at least 350 children ages 7 to 12 to camps.
