Position Description:
The Legal Counsel and Underwriter plays an integral role in the daily operations of our processing team. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, underwriting case-level facts for legal and medical funding applications, communicating with attorney clients about case facts, mapping expected case values, and maintaining a sound environment for the above.
Responsibilities:
- Underwriting pre-settlement funding requests
- Underwriting medical funding requests
- Coordinating with surgery centers on handling medical funding requests
- Intake calls from select top law firm accounts
- Reviewing case documents such as police reports, depositions, insurance documents
- Coordinating underwriting decisions with Intake, Processing, and Sales personnel
- Relay approval, partial approval, or denial notices to select law firms for fundings
- Work with the customer service team to ensure speedy processing of fundings
- Leverage technology and effectively use our internal systems to increase job efficiencies
- Advise the President and General Counsel of exciting and evolving operating and case issues
- Aid in negotiations and drafting credit facility documentation
- Manage business risk
- Perform other tasks or projects as assigned by the CEO, COO, and President and General Counsel
Qualifications:
Highly analytical, but at the same time emotionally intelligent enough to underwrite cases and communicate underwriting decisions to staff and clients. Due to the fluctuation in business levels in the lending industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the needs of the business. Regular attendance is essential to the successful performance of this position.
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:

· 3-5+ years experience working as an attorney in a plaintiff law firm, insurance defense law firm, or insurance company
· Member of the CA State Bar
· Experience in the legal field and knowledge of personal injury law is a plus
· Knowledge of overall business operations as they affect departments
