Provides legal counsel and guidance to the board of directors, top management, and association members. Protects the organization from legal action by interpreting laws and ensuring that the organization meets federal, state, municipal, and regulatory requirements. As Director of Government Affairs, reviews, analyzes and advocates for proposed legislation affecting organization. Manages legal staff, outside legal counsel, and lobbyists.
Reviews proposed legislation and regulations affecting real estate brokerage, home sales, not-for-profit entities and related issues.
Provides substantive analysis of legislation and regulations affecting organization including the preparation of written documents, talking points, and general analysis.
Educates, moderates panels, and presents legal updates to Realtors.
Provides legal counsel and guidance to directors, association members, staff and others.
Manages various legal projects and deadlines. Researches unique legal issues that impact members and/or association.
Develops, implements and monitors association compliance program. Oversees the review of the compliance program related to new or shifting compliance risks.
Represents MAR at meetings, legislative hearings, fundraisers and other events as needed.
Directs a staff of legal representatives and committees.
Performs any other function or responsibility as assigned.
Travels to other office locations as required.
J.D. Degree and member of Massachusetts Bar in good standing.
5 or more years of experience working with state regulatory bodies and legislature.
Ability to summarize and communicate in English complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
Ability to quickly and accurately read and analyze legislation/regulations.
Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, communication and time management skills.
Experience with computer systems, including the internet and some Microsoft Office applications which include Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
