The Role
The Counsel, Real Estate, is a real estate counsel for ARA's clients, including its commingled accounts and the various separate accounts that ARA manages. The individual will work directly with the Associate General Counsel and the Asset Management Team and regularly consult with the General Counsel and other members of senior management.
This role is primarily responsible for drafting and negotiating office, industrial, mixed-use, and retail leases, subleases, letters of intent, amendments, assignments, and other related leasing documents. The Counsel, Real Estate, also will be responsible for drafting other real estate transactional documents, including service contracts, easements, and construction-related agreements, and will provide advice to the business in the avoidance of legal disputes, including landlord/tenant legal issues, tenant defaults, and other miscellaneous legal matters.
As the firm is fast-moving, this person will be exposed to and will need to juggle several different issues daily while interacting with various members of the Asset Management Team.
Essential Functions
Draft and negotiate office, industrial, mixed-use, and retail leases, subleases, amendments, assignments, letters of intent, and other related leasing documents.
Draft and negotiate contracts relating to property management, leasing services, design, construction, licenses, easements, and other service agreements.
Strategically guide tenant default matters, including tenant bankruptcies.
Provide guidance and advice on legal aspects of leasing and other general real estate matters, including land use and title issues.
Manage eviction proceedings or outline alternatives such as direct negotiations with tenants to obtain possession and monetary judgments. Outline and assess the available options to pursue and direct the approach and strategy from a cost and benefit (i.e., recovery) view.
Support the Associate General Counsel, Real Estate, on other real estate legal matters as requested.
Candidate Qualifications
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
A member (in good standing) of the California State Bar (or willing and able to become a Registered In-House Counsel with the California State Bar).
Six to ten years of experience as a real estate attorney, preferably in Big Law. Some prior in-house experience is desirable.

Job Specifications
Expected work hours: 8:30 to 5:30, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends.
Travel: Occasionally may need to drive a personal vehicle for business.
Work environment and physical demands: General office environment at ARA's downtown Los Angeles corporate offices.
