Job Opening Summary
Provides legal counsel to UF Health Shands Hospital and affiliated entities on health care law, in particular, and all issues in general. Accepts assignments from the Chief Legal Officer and Associate Chief Legal Officer, and answers requests for assistance from all areas of the UF Health System by providing written and oral opinions and representation when necessary. Assists Chief Legal Officer and Associate Chief Legal Officer as appropriate and acts independently in developing policies and procedures on corporate and health law issues. Manages corporate contract activities. Recommends action on high-risk patient care issues (i.e., withdrawal of treatment; consent), recommends actions to minimize corporate liability, and represents the system in legal proceedings. Exercises decision-making authority in advising, negotiating and counseling UF Health staff on assigned issues. Provides expert advice, research and representation in the following non-exclusive list of general health law areas: mental health, medical consents, human resources, nursing, licensure, accreditation, litigation, federal and state regulation, medical records, confidentiality and contracts.
Job Opening Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Three to five years of experience related to health law or five to seven years of experience unrelated to health law as in-house counsel in a state agency, private organization or corporate law environment (or an equivalent of the preceding); a law degree; and membership in the Florida Bar is required or eligibility to work as Authorized House Counsel by the Florida Bar.
Recommended significant experience and demonstrable skill in a majority of the following general areas is expected: mental health, medical consents, immigration, federal and state regulation, human resources, management, administrative procedures, contracts, litigation and business law.
Ability to analyze complex factual business and legal issues arising out of the areas set out in the knowledge category, determine relevant legal issues and make recommendations or initiate action to achieve resolution (i.e., research, litigation, negotiation and settlement).
An undergraduate degree in a health-related field is desirable.
In addition, recommended significant experience and demonstrable skill in a majority of the following specialized areas is desirable: fraud and abuse, medical staff, tax-exempt status, hospital and corporate policies and procedures, provider relationships, organ procurement, operations and risk management, ethics, corporate structure, mergers and acquisitions, EMTALA and immigration.
Motor Vehicle Operator Designation:
Employees in this position will operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose as a "non-frequent driver."
NOTE: A frequent driver is defined as one who uses his/her personal or Shands automobile
a) at least once daily, b) at least five individual trips per week or c) drives, on average, over 150 miles per week in the performance of his/her job.
Member of the Florida Bar or other state bar membership with Florida Bar Authorized House Counsel eligibility.
Minimum Pay Rate - Hourly: $51.15
Midpoint Pay Rate - Hourly: $69.88
